Day: 1 of 4 - "Practice Strategies"

4 Day Training Course
Day: 1 of 4 -- "Practice Strategies"

Written By: Gary Semics

Motocross:

Motocross is balance, timing and anticipating what is going to happen in the next millisecond. This is largely dealing with your body's nervous system's automatic reflex reactions. And this is why it's so important to get the seat time in. Actually riding the bike is the only way to train this important delicate system. It is constant body movement and mastery of the five controls with the flow of riding. It's not trying to hold or force things.

When you really have it together mentally, the bike, the rider and the process of riding are one in the same, Total Flow Concentration my friend. May you experience it well, keep it under control -- keep her up there on that, but don't go over that edge.

In this 4-Day Training Course, I'm going to teach you how to practice in order to improve your speed and control for cornering, jumping and taking those whoops. The first day will cover the strategies on how to practice. Day two will be on how to apply the circle drill for cornering, day three on jumps and day four will be on whoops.

What we are dealing with here is making your body an extension of the motorcycle and the motorcycle an extension of your body -- to make the rider and motorcycle become one! There are two categories of forty-seven techniques that go into this formula. Category one has 17 techniques and it deals with maintaining the center of balance.

Category two has 25 techniques and it deals with using all five controls of the motorcycle -- the clutch, throttle, gearshift, and front and rear brakes. And there are 5 techniques that specifically apply to starts. You'll see that each riding subject, like cornering, jumping and whoops, will deal with maintaining the center of balance with your body movements, and using a combination of the controls.

This is where your control comes from. The more control you have, the faster you can go. For example, in order to slide the bike out of a corner, it takes the correct use of the clutch and throttle, and maintaining balance from the forward body position.

When jumping, it takes the correct body movement and throttle control as the bike compresses and rebounds from the jump.

When braking into a corner, it takes the correct body movement working from the rear of the bike, and controlling the front and rear brakes. These two categories, maintaining your center of balance with body movements, and controlling all five controls of the motorcycle, always work together in order for you to ride fast, smooth and in control.

With the correct application of the methods in this 4-Day Training Camp, you will be on the most effective route to making your body and the motorcycle one operating unit. But first, it's very important to understand the GSMXS 3 Step Motto. First you have to understand the techniques -- know them inside and out, frontwards and backwards.

Then, you have to be aware of them while you're practicing, and make sure you are doing them correctly. And thirdly comes repetition. It's through repetition, doing them over and over again everyday or as often as you can, that they will become automatic and you will feel what is happening as you ride and react to it through your nervous system's reflex reactions faster then you can even think!

But before you get to that level, you have to train your coordination, nervous system, and reflexes to do it correctly. Then, through repetition and time, you will flow like a pro. So the 3 Step Learning Motto is:

1. Understand the techniques,
2. Be able to do the techniques correctly, and thirdly...
3. Do them correctly over and over again, through repetition.

Repetition is the mother of skill. Do something often enough, and you will get good at it. Just make sure you're doing it over and over again the right way.

If not, you will develop bad habits. This correct type of repetition is a strong building platform in my teaching methods. The stationary and action practice drills will allow you to understand the techniques, be able to do them correctly and repeat them over and over again. Through this repetition, you will be on the fast track to improvement.

As I mentioned, we will be using the GS 3 Step Learning Motto. And in order to make it as easy as possible for all you to learn the proper techniques in this 4-Day Training Camp, we will use stationary practice methods and action practice drills. The beauty of the stationary and action practice drills, is that it will allow you to apply the GS Three Step Learning Method.

By Breaking all the important techniques for cornering and braking, the jumps and whoops down, and working on them separatley, even the difficult learners will be able to grasp it, do it correctly, and in time, make it a part of your automatic reflex reactions -- a whole new smoother, faster riding style.

But let me remind you, according to how hard you work at it and how talented you are, it will take some time. But also remember that if it was easy, anyone off the street could do it in a few days. Be patient, you have to put in the seat time. On Day 2, we will begin applying these practice methods to The Circle Drill for Cornering.
